For some individuals, a visit to the dentist can cause fear and anxiety. Even basic treatment such as having teeth cleaned is so overwhelming, these patients will forego this much needed procedure. However, this is no longer a problem when your dental provider offers sedation dentistry.

There are different types of sedation employed based on the procedure; however, oral sedation is a great option for patients dealing with anxiety. The patient will take a sedative at home about one hour before their scheduled appointment. Reliable transportation is required as the patient will not be able to drive to or from their appointment.

Once the patient arrives, the dentist will administer additional medication to put the patient in a total tranquil state. Since safety and comfort are critical to a successful procedure, the patient is monitored constantly to make sure their vital signs remain steady and in a safe range.

Throughout the procedure, the patient remains awake; however, many patients feel as if they slept through their treatment. This allows the dentist to perform needed treatment knowing that the patient is totally safe and at ease.

It is not just anxious patients that can benefit from sedation dentistry. There are many health situations that may prevent a patient from sitting or reclining for extended periods. In addition, some psychological issues may require sedation to successfully treat a patient.

There are individuals that have a fear of needles and others that don’t deal well with the sound of whirring equipment. These patients can benefit greatly from sedation dentistry.

Once treatment has been completed, the patient is monitored until they are fully awake. Since the patient may feel groggy for several hours, it is advised that they do not return to work or school. They should go home and rest for the remainder of the day, and have someone to stay with them for a few hours until the sedatives have worn off.

Many dentists will combine needed treatment into one visit such as hygiene, dental fillings, tooth extraction … so as to prevent multiple trips for needed dental care. Sedation dentistry is a wonder for a nervous patient who would avoid the dentist, and can now relax while obtaining needed dental care.
