Relaxing Sleep Dentistry
Dr. Jason Hui knows that many people may feel apprehensive about going to the dentist due to innate fear or past traumatic dental experiences, and this is very common! Our goal is provide gentle care with compassion, understanding, and respect for your feelings. We offer sleep dentistry (also known as dental sedation) for patients who need it to relax while receiving treatment. We strongly believe that you can restore yourself to optimal dental health and feel comfortable in the process!
Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)
Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is a sweet-smelling, colorless gas used in conjunction with oxygen. It can create feelings of tranquility and well-being when inhaled, and some patients even describe a sense of floating or giddiness. Nitrous oxide is administered through a little cone that sits on the patient’s nose throughout treatment, after which normal breathing of pure oxygen for a few minutes entirely reverses the effects. This safe, easy dental sedation method is much appreciated by patients who experience dental anxiety, those who have a strong gag reflex that interferes with dental treatment, and young children who have a hard time relaxing enough to hold still during procedures. Laughing gas can also make dental visits easier and allow for better experiences for patients with mental or physical impairments.
Oral Conscious Sedation
Sometimes referred to as “sleep dentistry” or “relaxation dentistry”, oral conscious sedation is another method we offer to help patients get as comfortable as possible through a simple pill. Some people call this option “sleep dentistry,” but though patients feel extremely calm and relaxed, they are still mildly conscious and able to respond. Oral sedation makes it possible for more patients to have all necessary dental treatment finished in one day, all while they are pleasantly unaware of their procedure. Contact us if this sounds like what you have been looking for!
When discussing sleep dentistry with you for yourself or for a loved one, we will ask about dental and overall health, including questions about current medication and habits such as alcohol consumption and smoking. These factors and others are carefully considered when we plan treatment, and we will review the proper preparation steps required prior to a dental sedation appointment.
